Welcome to our King-Barnes Families website.

The journey to find the history and the genealogy of Slater Hunter King, Sr., (1927-1969) and his family began, as a labor of love in the Spring of 1969. The mission was to be sure that his six children, Slater, Jr., Alonzo, Jonathan, Abena, DuBois and Harriet, would have an intimate knowledge of the ancestors from whose shoulders they reach.

What a marvelous journey of discovery it has been! The people I have met, past and present include the names Barnes, Blackshear, Bowers, Gammons, Hartsfield, Hunter, Long and May. They all blend to mean King-Barnes families. The decision to broaden the definition and scope of the research was fueled by the vision and passion of William "Boo" King, William Layon King, Lillie King Whitt, Muriel Ann King, Clennon Leslie King, Andrew Hunter Bowers, George Washington Barnes, Marian Barnes Spears, Lurina Barnes Tibbs and Walter Watson.

The question, "How are we kin?", is a central motivating and driving force to continue the search. We have determined relationships. A critical now point of the research is to unearth, validate, record and publish, kinships. These tasks must be finished by others than myself.

The need to bring some sense and actuality of closure to this thirty year search is quickened in memory of the life of Slater Hunter King, Jr., (1950-2000) and the face to face intimacy with mortality.

The completion of this research is passed, with the publishing of this website, to the members of my dear King-Barnes nieces, nephews, cousins, and children in general; and to my beloved grandchildren, Nina, Valencia and Kamil, in particular.
